Starting December 1, Play Sports will only be available via the Telenet TV box, Play Sports app and Telenet TV app

Mechelen, November 28, 2025 - As of December 1, the Play Sports channels will no longer be broadcast on Telenet’s Digicorder and Digibox or via CI+ (‘TV with a card’) and the Play Sports channels will disappear from these platforms. Play Sports will remain accessible via the Telenet TV box (IP), the Play Sports app and the Telenet TV app. This change is a consequence of technological developments and is part of the Telenet strategy to migrate all digital TV customers to the new Telenet TV box by the end of 2026, offering them the best possible digital TV experience. The new TV box is not only more energy-efficient and compact but also offers customers additional features such as 7-day catch-up TV, Cloud recording and voice control, providing a modern and user-friendly viewing experience. In addition, the new TV box also provides easy access to numerous streaming apps.

What does this mean for our customers?

Play Sports customers who already have a Telenet TV box in their home don’t have to do anything. Customers who have not yet traded in their older decoder will proactively be contacted by e-mail encouraging them to do so. They will find relevant information on our website, will have received notifications on their TV screen during Play Sports broadcasts and a notification has also been posted on their bill since October 1.

Telenet will not automatically stop charging Play Sports customers who have not yet made the switch. Indeed, these customers still retain the option to continue watching via the Telenet TV box, Play Sports app or Telenet TV app. If they wish to discontinue the Play Sports subscription, they need to take action themselves. Cancellation can be arranged free of charge via customer services or via MyTelenet. Customers who would like to trade in their old decoder will find a step-by-step plan on the Telenet website.

Why is Telenet doing this?

The switch to the Telenet TV box is necessary to ensure a stable and future-proof viewing experience. The TV box works entirely over the Internet (so-called IPTV technology) and supports features that are not technically feasible on older decoders. To continue watching Play Sports via the traditional TV screen, a Telenet IPTV EOS or Apollo TV box is required - if the TV set does not support apps - plus a Telenet Internet subscription.

Moreover, rights holders of major sports competitions are increasingly imposing stricter requirements to combat piracy. With the TV box, Telenet is able to offer a secure, future-oriented solution that responds to the needs of a digital society. The new technology - which is much more energy-efficient than the Digicorder and Digibox - makes it particularly easy to store programs in the Cloud, use catch-up TV, record unlimited programmes and much more.

In 2026, Telenet will continue phasing out the Digicorder and Digibox. Interactive features, such as the Telenet TV app and Replay TV, will gradually disappear. By summer 2026, Telenet will proceed with discontinuing content packages, and Streamz, Play More, and Passion XL will only be available through the Telenet TV-box.
